Goss Wins Gold at Aussie Track Championships

Goss Wins Gold Aussie Track Championships

Tasmanian cyclist Belinda Goss wins the gold medal at the Australian Track Cycling Championship, making it her fourth straight victory in a points race.

Goss said that she was a little bit nervous coming into the race, since she was still recovering from an illness the week before, but she adds that she couldn’t be happier with her win. “Womens track cycling in Australia has certainly stepped up and the standard we have here is world class, so to win here tonight, I am really happy,” the female champion said.

Belinda Goss displayed world-class skills, too, as she dominated the race and ended up harvesting the points in 8 out of 10 sprints during the 100-lap event. In fact, she only needed 19 laps to clinch the gold medal, and finished the race with 22 points. Josephine Tomic, the current omnium world champion, finished with 16 points behind Goss to get the 2nd place win.

It was a “fantastic race” by the two female riders, as 18-year old Megan Dunn put it. Dunn, a 6-time Junior World Champion from Dubbo, was competing with the elites in a points racing event for the first time. She suffered a crash midway into the race, but came back to earn 14 points and the bronze medal. Dunn had previously raced in the Beijing World Cup last week, winning her first points race there.

Cornu Focused On World Track Championships

Cornu Focused On World Track Championships

Dominique Cornu has his sights firmly focused on the 2010 World Track Championships as he begins his first season with Team Skil-Shimano. The Belgian star has already began track tests in The Netherlands, with his new team in full support of his Track Worlds goals.

Cornu is taking this opportunity from Team Skil-Shimano to try out his new bike and gear at the Apeldoorn Velodrome in The Netherlands, and he is reportedly pleased with the initial results. The Belgian rider is known as a specialist in racing against the clock, and will be gunning for a victory in the 4,000m Individual Pursuit, as well as getting a win in the team pursuit events.

Team Skil-Shimano has given full priority to the development of the team skinsuits for this season, focusing on the aerodynamic qualities of the materials, including the stitching on the suits themselves. Their efforts seemed to have paid off, as Cornu has expressed his satisfaction with the equipment. The Belgian star says that testing for aerodynamics is “extremely important”, and that he has already seen positive results.

Cornu will be joining his teammates at Skil-Shimano for the Walloon Classics of Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Amstel Gold after the completion of the World Track Championships.

London’s 2012 Olympic Velodrome Underway

Londons 2012 Olympic Velodrome Underway

In 2012 London will be home to the Summer Olympics. The race has started early for some who are working on the construction of a state of the art Olympic Velodrome.

Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) officials are keen on emphasizing cycling in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Stadiums have been strategically placed to insure “cycling is at the heart of it” , confirms ODA project manager Richard Arnold.

The oddly shaped Velordrome will be located on the northern end of the park. Its design will enable the entire track to receive a continues flow of crowd cheer noise. Relative to other venues on the park, the Velordrome will be the greenest, partly through its natural ventilation by design.

The Velodrome is expected to be completed by 7 January 2011, making it the first building on the park for the Summer Olympics to be held in London.
