Meyer Will Use 3T The Sphinx Handlebars

Meyer Will Use 3T The Sphinx Handlebars

Cameron Meyer of Team Garmin-Transitions will be using a new handlebar from 3T for the track world championships in Australia.

The new product is called the Sphinx. It has a flat aero, top section that rises before curving downwards. Thin aero profiles are found in between the end of the hooks and the bends of this UCI-friendly bar.

The handlebar was named the Sphinx for the flat forearm position of points of racers. 3T developed this item with Meyer.

Richard McAinsh, a technical director of 3T, explains how they worked with Meyer on the conception of the handlebar. “We know Cameron through Team Garmin-Transitions. He came to us and explained how he rides the points race, alternating between level high speed and all-out sprinting. We saw the chance to use a new UCI-compliant aerofoil we were developing.”

A rider can somehow copy a road position with the raised bends. The wrists are positioned on the tops and the hands are placed on the lever hoods. Although the design of flat tops is not unique, the aero sections on the drops are made especially for track racing.

McAinsh further describes the Sphinx. “The main driver of the design was to get the aerofoil section inside the UCI’s 3:1 gauge.” The Sphinx will be made available in the market this year.

Flu Forces Cornu to Miss Track Worlds

Flu Forces Cornu to Miss Track Worlds

Dominique Cornu will be forced to watch from the sidelines as he has officially withdrawn from the UCI Track World Championships due to illness. He was expected to make a bid for the 4,000-meter individual pursuit event and was actually one of the top favorites to win.

Cornu was the only cyclist from Belgium to win a medal at the 2009 World Championships, and had high hopes of winning another medla for his country in this year’s competition, which is scheduled to be held in Denmark this coming March 24.

However, a bout of flu (which had sidelined him since February) has put his plans for success on hold. Cornu had already missed riding in the Ruta del Sol and the recent Paris-Nice event, and is still far from getting back on his feet, never mind going back into the saddle.

In the light of Cornu’s absence, Belgium’s hopes for a medal finish will fall on the shoulders of Iljo Keisse. Keisse will be facing a tight schedule that includes the scratch and point races, and he will be riding in the Madison with compatriot Ingmar De Poortere.

De Poortere will also be competing in the individual pursuit races, as Jonathan Dufrasne steps up to fill the gap in Belgium’s pre-qualified pursuit slot. The men won’t have a team pursuit lineup for this year, so it will be the women riders who will compete in the 3,000-meter team pursuit.

All Systems Go for New Zealand at UCI Track Worlds

All Systems Go for New Zealand at UCI Track Worlds

New Zealand is all systems go for the upcoming UCI Track World Championships in Denmark, with strong contenders on both the men’s and women’s teams.

Alison Shanks, the current women’s individual pursuit world champion, will be leading the women’s team for New Zealand, with strong support coming from able riders like Jesse Sergent, Wes Gough, Sam Bewley, and Peter Latham. Shanks will be competing in both the individual and team pursuit events.

Aside from pursuing a strong finish at the Track Worlds, New Zealand is also planning on using the event to get ready for the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in India this coming October 2010. The team has already showed that it is capable of competing at the highest levels, and as head coach Tim Carswell says, “I would like to think we can make gains as we work towards the Commonwealth Games later in the year and on to the 2012 London Olympics”.

Carswell adds that the focus for the team right now is getting into the best possible shape, and that they are expecting to build upon their momentum in the Commonwealth Games and adding “more strength across the board”.

Another prominent New Zealand cyclist, Tom Scully, will also be racing in the Track Worlds, where he will be looking to further strengthen his reputation as a young rider. Scully already has two Track Worlds victories under his belt, among others, and is one of the top favorites to watch in the event this year.

Meanwhile, team coach Tim Carswell mentions that the team’s sprint program “has improved to a stage where we wanted to ensure we have covered all eventualities in Copenhagen”. He explains that even though the focus right now seems to be on the endurance cyclists, their sprinters also have a lot to offer, and he will be counting on Sam Webster, Eddie Dawkins, Adam Stewart, Ethan Mitchell, and Simon Van Velthooven to provide stiff competition against the other national squads.

New Zealand team for UCI Track World Championships:

Men: Sam Bewley, Eddie Dawkins, Wes Gough, Peter Latham, Ethan Mitchell, Marc Ryan, Tom Scully, Jesse Sergent, Myron Simpson, Adam Stewart, Simon Van Velthooven, Sam Webster

Women: Rushlee Buchanan, Gemma Dudley, Lauren Ellis, Jaime Neilsen, Alison Shanks
